Alice Farnham, Debora Waldman, Numa Bischof-Ullmann, Christian Buchmann and Dominique Meyer, five Classical Music star personalities music will be in Vienna on April 10th and 11th, alongside Elizabeth Askren and Frederic Chaslin, both president of the Jury. In chorus together, they will elect the European women conductor finalist, for the very first step of the MAWOMA Contest.
Diversity, experience and talent are the three key words that define the creation of this incredible team. In harmony, Frederic Chaslin and Elisabeth Askren will pilot this European Step. A brief biography of our five protagonists gives the right measure to the quality of their uniqueness.
British conductor, Alice Farnham skilled herself at the Saint Pertesburg Conservatory with Ilya Musi. Passionate by cross-genre productions, she did direct the Danse Opera Carmen Moves and Phillip Glass Satyagraha at the Stockholm Folkoperan.
Invited in every corner of the planet, the Maestra went to the London Royal Opera House, Manoel Theater in La Valette, The Singapour Lyric Opera… She was also invited to lead several Ballets. Her Sweden notoriety is blooming. She has also recently collaborated with the Malmö Opera’s Orchestra. Very engaged in the youngest generation development, she is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Women Conductors with the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Conductor as well, Debora Waldman was born in Brazil and did her musical studies in Israel, then in Buenos Aires where she obtained two golden medals, in Orchestra Conducting and Directing. While she was in France to enhance her work, she intrigued Kurt Masur. After spending three years on his side, and under the synergy of the National French Orchestra, she leads an amazing carrer in France and around the world.
She conducts the National Lyon Orchestra, the Lausanne Chamber of Orchestra, the Academic Colon Theater Orchestra in Buenos Aires, or even the National Colombia Orchestra. She did create the Idomeneo Orchestra. One of the greatest moments of her season was the creation of the Charlotte Sohy War Symphony (she discovered the 1971 partition) with the Franche-Comté Victor Hugo Orchestra. This great creation results with a documentary and a book. Furthermore, she was elected « Talented Conductor » by the ADAMI.
Numa Bischoff Ullman, Artisitic Director of the Lucerne Symphonic Orchestra, has contributed to create one of the major Swiss orchestra with an astonishing international influence. Raised in Swiss, France, and Italy with long stays in Asia, North Africa and Latin America, he studied many languages, musicology and cello. He has a trading diploma. His versatility entitle him a great open-mindedness. His attachement to Artistic Creation push him to develop an entrepreneurial and innovative funding for Cultural Institutions. I created the Lucerne Zaubersee Festival, dedicated to Russian music.
Christian Buchmann is the General Director of the Wiener KammerOrchester, one of the most reputed chamber orchestra on the planet. Closely with holder Conductor Stefan Vladar, Christian Buchman contribute to the radiation of this Orchestra in Austria and internationally, with many worldwide representations. The list of contributors and collaborators illustrate greatly its attractiveness: Martha Argerich, Cecilia Bartoli, Hélène Grimaud, Heinz Holliger, Janine Jansen, Kiri Te Kanawa, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Vasily Petrenko… or even Frédéric Chaslin.
Director of the prestigious Vienna Opera (Staatsoper), Dominique Meyer was the first non-german Director to ever direct this Opera, considered as one of the most important in the Musical World, both on production side and popularity.
In the past, this Music Temple was leaded by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan. Each season, the Staatsoper is programming around sixty different Ballet and Operas for 350-400 representations. Besides the fact that he is a wise manager, he has directed the Paris Opera during the Bastille Opera opening, the Lausanne Opera, but also the Champs-Elysées Theater.
