MAWOMA IN PORTRAITS
FOUNDING PRESIDENT OF MAWOMA
Clémence Guerrand was born in Avignon in 1982. She claims not to have ‘chosen’ her career as a pianist, but that this instrument was naturally put forward as an obvious choice: “my grandfather was a pianist. At age three I was already spending my life listening to the piano.”
At age four, she began to play. The following year, she entered the Avignon Conservatoire. Here, she gained two first prizes [now D.F.S degrees], in piano and chamber music, before joining the Marseille Conservatoire to do the ‘cycle de perfectionnement’ [advanced course].
Supervised by international soloist and teacher Bernard d’Ascoli, she then undertook several concert tours abroad. Her training continued at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris with a season of concerts with Bruno Rigutto and Mickaël Wladowski.
In 2016, noting that there was a very low number of female conductors, she decided to create a competition aiming to promote young female conductor talents. She chose to name this competition MAWOMA, meaning Music and Women Maestros.
